In 1901 brothers Bortolo, Francesco and Giovanbattista created their family business, Prandelli, by the banks of the River Gobbia in the Lumezzane Valley to use the kinetic energy of the water to operate their machinery. During the First World War, the factory produced bullets for the Italian Army. At the end of the war the factory was converted for other uses and in 1947 Gianbattista’s sons, Pietro, Felice and Giacomo created Mepra (acronym for Metallurgica Prandelli).

The furnaces were initially installed outside because the material contained water and gun powder impurities. In 1950 they decided to turn half of their production over to stainless steel flatware, which was a huge success and in 1953 they discontinued the production of brass cutlery.
