Venice Home Collection is synonymous with fine linen products, preserving the Venetian tradition of beautiful linens embellished with lace.
In the 15th century Venice gained immense wealth, primarily from the trade of spices, such as pepper and cinnamon. The lifestyle of the rich Venetians was so elevated that the Venetian government had to intervene to limit the excess of luxury displayed by Venetian ladies, who sometimes wore up to 15Kg of gold and precious gems.
To bypass the government's decision, the ladies transferred their wealth to their clothing and linens by introducing Venetian lace, which was so refined that it became more precious than the gold. Venetian needlepoint lace was so expensive because it was made of tiny stitches, using only a needle and thread, without a fabric support - it is for this reason that it is called a 'stitch in the air'. This Venetian fashion was adopted by the royal courts of Europe, primarily in Belgium and France.
The origins of Venetian needlepoint lace came from the skills of the poor fishermen's wives, who continuously patched the holes in their husband's trousers, using only a needle and thread as they were too poor to own fabrics.
With the political and economical decline of Venice, the art of lace making was almost lost for over 200 years, but came back into fashion at the end of the 1800s.
Current production has remained loyal to traditions, excluding any form of mass production in order to offer items made in the traditional way.
